It’s not actually wrong, but it may be temporarily outdated or easily misunderstood.
Another important point to consider: CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko calculate market cap using the circulating supply, not total supply.
This is standard policy for all listed projects.
That means:
✅ Only unlocked and publicly tradable tokens are included
❌ Tokens that are still locked, vested, or under project control (treasury, team, ecosystem wallets) are excluded from the market cap calculation
e.g. If a token has 3 billion in total supply, but only 900 million are currently in circulation,
→ the market cap is based on 900 million × token price, not the full 3 billion.
