This is the icon for durability in the game. When the durability goes down, you can't use this hero anymore. Durability decreases every time you go to battle, regardless of the outcome of the battle. Every game element (such as heroes and units) that has durability can only be used while the durability is >0. On every use (such as fighting in a battle), the durability would go down by 1.
